We’re excited to share Tableau Desktop 9.1 includes single sign-on (SSO) support for SAP HANA. This augments Tableau’s connector for SAP HANA. Connectors are also available for SAP BW, Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ. These connectors simplify your workflow, allowing you to connect once, then leave security to Tableau while you get into the flow of your data.

In order to build a culture of self-service analytics, you need two things: the right tool, and the right support. Here at Tableau, we’re building that culture at scale with our own Drive methodology for company-wide implementation, and we’re seeing the benefits. We use our own product to engage with our data, and an internal team provides enablement support. The enablement process begins with what is perhaps the most crucial step: enabling users with data.

Two years ago, Vente-Exclusive found itself overwhelmed with data. In 1753, Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg took on the non-trivial task of creating a timeline showing the complete history of the world. It was a noble effort, and his final chart came in at a whopping 54 feet (16 meters) wide! Barbeu-Dubourg didn’t have screens, of course. Instead, he had to be creative. He created a mechanical scroller. And believe it or not, his work can teach us a few things.

Our goal is to communicate effectively with data. Software tools provide nice templates for you to show your data. But sometimes the inspiration won’t come from the screen; you're likely to get something better from a piece of paper. If you’re trying to come up with a better way of communicating your insights, step away from the screen and take up the pencil.
