Tableau is placed as a Leader for the second year in a row – and we’re thrilled about that. (See the graphic below.) Gartner’s analysis of the Business Intelligence market is that it is based on hundreds of surveys of actual product users. So deep thanks go out to our customers since they are the ones who answer Gartner’s call for input. We aim to build products that delight our customers; so it’s gratifying to see that our products are helping them and delivering a great analytics experience.
The document reviews all the major vendors and it’s easy to see how each of them is positioned in the Magic Quadrant itself. But the report is also extremely useful because of its analysis of key trends in this industry. There were 2 things I saw of interest.
First is that Gartner continues to recognize the emerging dominance of “data discovery” vendors. The major headline is that data discovery capabilities are dominating new purchasing requirements even for large-scale deployments. The key caution is that governing data discovery is challenging. We see these trends too. Our growth is proof of the value of “data discovery” and we hear customers asking for more help on governance and IT-driven needs. That’s why our development team is investing significant resources and time into building more robust enterprise and governance capabilities in Tableau 8.2, due out this summer, and 9.0.
And second is that Gartner has changed the criteria by which they evaluate business intelligence platforms to better reflect market dynamics and trends. Specifically, they’ve dropped 3 capabilities that once helped define Business Intelligence: Scorecarding, Predictive Analytics and Prescriptive Analytics. Scorecards are something few companies use; Predictive Analytics and Prescriptive Analytics are now covered by a different report.
The bigger point is that they’ve added 5 capabilities:
These new capabilities are areas that Tableau has already developed solutions but where we continue to innovate. We’ll keep pushing the envelope, driven by what our customers want and need.
