Tableau's features are carefully designed to help people transform data into meaning. The easier it is to express ideas in a calculation language, the more meaning people can generate. Level of Detail (LOD) Expressions allows people to express powerful concepts using simple statements.

Here in the United Kingdom where I work, we’re counting down until the general election on May 8. It’s a fascinating election as our nation comes to grips with coalition politics. The extent to which the media controls the outcomes of elections is important and yet hard to quantify. This has become harder since the advent of social media. This year’s event is being called the social media election, and diverse organisations such as the BBC and Buzzfeed will be covering it using their own distinct styles. What does the data tell us?

Tableau Online is excited to be the first member of the Tableau family to release the new and improved 9.0 Server experience to our customers. On January 9th, we launched the Tableau 9.0 beta program. Over the past two weeks, we've seen an outpouring of blog posts, tutorials, and helpful feedback from the community. What are LOD expressions? As Alan Eldridge puts it, they "allow you to directly define the level of detail at which a calculation should be performed." That means they give you much greater control over how your data is aggregated. LOD expressions are one way to bring your data to a whole new level (get it?) in version 9. However, the possibilities don't end there. There are a number of other features that are enabling greater data acrobatics as well.
