We are bringing the fun and excitement of Iron Viz exclusively to students! Iron Viz is the world’s largest data viz competition that ignites and showcases the Tableau Community. Iron Viz: Student Edition is a student-only virtual competition for students that are looking to up level their viz skills, connect with the Tableau Community and prepare for the great Iron Viz! 

The top 3 winners will get Tableau merch, a Tableau certification package to add to your CV and the opportunity to showcase their vizzes with 2020 Iron Viz winners.

How it works

1. Join Tableau for Students

You will need Tableau Desktop to complete your visualisation. Don't worry – with Tableau for Students, students receive Tableau licences and e-learning for free. Once you verify your student status, you will receive instructions on how to get started with your Tableau Desktop licence.

2. Create a Tableau Public profile

Only visualisations published on Tableau Public and submitted to our form here will be considered valid entries for the contest. If you don't already have one, create a profile on Tableau Public.

3. Get the data

This year's Iron Viz data theme was around the environment. Download this data folder to access guidelines and recommended data sets.

4. Submit your viz

Publish your visualisation to a Tableau Public profile (learn how to do this here). Make sure the data that you're using can be shared publicly. Once published, include a link to your published visualisation through the submission form.

How is Iron Viz: Student Edition different from Iron Viz?

Iron Viz: Student Edition is exclusively for students! Iron Viz: Student Edition is for students aged 18+ who are looking to develop their viz skills, but aren’t quite ready to compete at the Iron Viz level. This virtual programme is a great starting point into the world of Viz competitions. Students will also have the opportunity to connect with Iron Viz winners and meet members of the Tableau Community.

How will the vizzes be judged?

The judging criteria will be based on 100 points:

  • Creativity (25 points) – Does the viz present insights in an interesting way? 
  • Beauty/Design (25 points) – Is the visualisation beautiful, relevant and effective?
  • Analytical depth (25 points) – Was the data used in a way to explore?
  • Best practices (25 points) – Rate the visualisation in terms of overall best practices

What is the theme and submission deadline?

The theme for 2020 Iron Viz: Student Edition will be around the environment, and you can download the data here. The deadline  will be on 20 December 2020 at 11:59 PM PT and the winners will be announced on or before 15 January 2021.

How many entries can one person make?

Only one entry per round is allowed and work must be original. You can make edits to your submission up until the deadline. If you submit multiple entries, only the most recent entry will be considered.

How will the winner be chosen?

A panel of judges comprised of data viz experts, previous Iron Viz finalists and guest judges will evaluate all submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Design
  • Storytelling
  • Analysis
  • Best practices

The winners will be announced on the Tableau Public blog on or around 15 January 2021.
