SEATTLE, WA – October 2, 2012 – Tableau Software has teamed up with Rick Smolan, the creator of the groundbreaking Day in the Life series, on The Human Face of Big Data, a multi-platform, globally crowdsourced media project. The Human Face of Big Data is focused on the ability to collect, analyze, triangulate and visualize vast amounts of data in real time.
Tableau joins primary sponsor EMC Corporation, and other supporting sponsors including Cisco, VMware and Originate at a number of “Mission Control” global events taking place on October 2, 2012 in New York, London and Singapore. Tableau presenters will analyze, visualize and interpret data collected from Twitter and other sources to highlight the conversations surrounding a selection of the stories from the project.
"The deluge of digital data is reshaping our global economy and bringing big opportunities to drive new levels of growth and innovation," said Elissa Fink, Chief Marketing Officer at Tableau Software. "Tableau is proud to be a part of this global initiative to bring awareness to Big Data and empower people to harness its potential."
One of the key components of The Human Face of Big Data is a free mobile app that engages people around the world in a series of activities using the sensors in their phones as well as enabling them to compare their responses to thought-provoking questions with others around the world. Participants will be able to map their daily path, share objects and rituals that bring them luck, get a glimpse into the one special thing that others want to experience during their lifetime and discover hidden secrets about their world. Participants will also be able to find their "data doppelganger." In addition, the project includes a student element called Data Detectives, a large-format book with more than 200 photographs along with essays and infographics, a free iPad app and a documentary.
"Tableau’s rapid-fire analytics are a fascinating component at Mission Control," said Rick Smolan. "Visual analytics are changing the way people interact with data and making it possible to solve some of business and society’s most challenging issues. Together with our sponsors, we hope to drive global discussion around this important topic."
