Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2021.3

Planning an upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2021.3? Start here!

New and Improved Data Connectors

Tableau 2021.3 makes it even easier to connect to the data you care about. You can now use Google Cloud Service accounts to create and manage your connections to Google BigQuery, and access multiple Salesforce objects at once using SOQL relationship queries.

Custom Sample Workbooks

New in 2021.3, you can now customize the set of workbooks displayed in the samples area of the Tableau Desktop start page, so that users can easily see and access relevant content.

Mapping Improvements

In Tableau 2021.3, we've made spatial joins more powerful. Now in addition to joining between point and polygon geometries, you can make polygon/line, polygon/polygon, and line/line joins to allow for more complex data analysis.  We've also added more WKT and GeoJSON support so you can easily translate WKT and GeoJSON text markup from Excel and CSV data sources into usable spatial geometry in Tableau.

Other Resources

Sharing workbook with others?
If you know what versions other viewers will use to open your workbook, you can use the Export As Version… option. This will let other users in your organization open and edit a workbook even when they aren't using the latest version of Tableau Desktop (down to Tableau 10.2).

You might receive an error when publishing your workbook. See this Knowledge Base article for more information.

Test it out first!
Take a look at the Known Issues and install the most recent version of Tableau Desktop to make sure everything works as expected.
  • You can install multiple versions of Tableau Desktop on the same computer. For example, if 2020.1 is the most recent version installed it will become the default.
  • Change your default back by following the instructions here: Upgrading Tableau Desktop.

Installing on a new computer?
You'll have to transfer your license from one computer to the other. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop and Move or Deactivate Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help.
