Practice and Grow Your Data Skills with Tableau Community Projects

Practice your data visualization and analytics skills, wherever you are in your Tableau journey, with Community Projects. Members of the Tableau Community create and host data visualization challenges where you can learn, practice, and apply your data skills across a variety of topics, products, and causes. These skills-based challenges were first introduced in 2015 to create a space for data viz learners of all levels to come together and collaborate on projects that push the boundaries of what's possible with data. Now, there are over twenty (and counting) different projects to choose from with thousands of participants joining from around the world.

Who participates in Tableau Community projects?

Anyone can participate in a community challenge—including you! You'll find projects spanning different skill levels and topics of interest ready to meet you where you’re at.

Just starting your data visualization learning journey? There are beginner-friendly projects like Back 2 Viz Basics, focusing on building foundational data viz skills. Maybe you’re past the beginner data stage and looking to take your data and analytics skills to the next level? Community Projects like Iron Quest let you practice data sourcing, preparation, and visualization skills in a themed monthly challenge, and Workout Wednesday challenges you to re-create an interactive data visualization.

There are also projects centered around data visualization practices like Storytelling with Data and Preppin’ Data that welcome all skill levels.

Beyond skill levels, you'll also find projects covering everything from industry insights to personal passion topics. Turn your love for pop culture into stunning visualizations with DataFam Con and visualize data from your favorite games with Games Night Viz. If you’re focused on diving deep into industry insights, consider Project Health Viz and EduVizzers.

Tableau Public, the home for community projects

Tableau Public powers Tableau Community Projects—it is the free platform that allows users to explore, create, and publicly share data visualizations online. It is also the world's largest repository of data visualizations.

Data visualizations created for community projects are shared on Tableau Public. Once a community project visualization is uploaded onto Tableau Public, the community can interact with, download, and learn from the viz. Participants will also often share their visualizations on social media and include the Tableau Public link for easy viewing, analysis and feedback.

How to get started with Tableau Community Projects

Community projects are run independently by members of the DataFam. Project leaders determine the cadence, data set(s), theme, and prompt for the challenges they release. Be sure to visit their site for full details.

1. View the list of community projects and find one you’re passionate about. 
2. Follow the project and project leaders on social media to stay in the loop of new challenges (Tip: want some extra practice? Take on a previous challenge).
3. It’s time to put your skills to the test—as soon as a new challenge gets posted, get vizzing!
4. When your viz is complete, publish it to Tableau Public. If you haven’t claimed your free Tableau Public account yet, here’s our step-by-step guide to get you started.
5. Share your viz on social media using #DataFam and the relevant community project hashtag.
