New Tableau Server - Core Licensing and Pricing Structure

On April 6, 2015 all orders of Tableau Server will reflect a new licensing and pricing structure. The process of contacting Tableau to get a quote remains the same, but what does change mean to your business?

Tableau is now making a distinction between a “Single Machine” and a “Multi-Machine” configuration of Tableau Server – Core purchases. The “Single Machine” license permits the initial 8 Core and any additional 8 Cores to run only on the same machine. Currently, all Tableau Server – Core licenses are considered “Multi-Machine” although not directly stated. This change will require a specification of “Multi-Machine” license in order to get the benefits of server clusters with worker servers or to establish High Availability back up servers. Beginning in April, you will need to determine if the customer qualifies for “Single Machine” or “Multi-Machine” licenses (only "Commercial" customers, less than US$1 Billion in annual revenue world-wide, have the option for “Single Machine”).

To capture the significant advances in functionality and performance we are delivering in Tableau Server and enhancements in the upcoming Version 9, the price overall increases by about 8%. However, there will be a significant price difference between “Single-Machine” and “Multi-Machine” licenses. This will impact “Commercial” customers who choose to go “Multi-Machine”. There is no change to pricing or licensing for Tableau Server – Interactors.

You can help customers beat this price increase and “Multi-Machine” requirement with orders they place prior to April 6, 2015. Additionally, all orders in 2015 from customers already established with Core licensing prior to April will continue to have "Multi-Machine" functionality. Meaning your "Commercial" customers will get the same benefit at the lower price of a "Single Machine". There is, however, a significant price difference between “Single-Machine” and “Multi-Machine” licenses. This will impact “Commercial” customers who choose to go “Multi-Machine”.
