May I have the envelope please? The Winner of Iron Viz Silver Screen is...
It was no surprise to us when we announced the last Iron Viz feeder competition - Iron Viz Silver Screen - that it was going to be a big one. Few subjects inspire as much enthusiasm and creativity as the movies, TV probably being one of them.
This competition showed the community at its best, and we screened 72 entries, 47% of which came from Iron Viz first-timers. That's even better than the 44% newbie participation from the Iron Viz: On Safari competition! Yet again, we have good participation across the world, with 43% of entries coming from outside North America, including 10 from India, and 1 from both Singapore and South Korea.
Now, enough stalling. In the last Iron Viz feeder contest we introduced the Best Rookie category, and with 47% of our entries coming from rookies, you know the competition was fierce!
Iron Viz: Silver Screen Best Rookie
Rookie Katie Weander takes the statue for her magical I Love Lucy: Facts and Figures Behind the Reign viz. Katie combined out-of-the-box charts with style, and showed us the story of Lucy with the complete lineup in an analog TV inset - wow!
Meander through Katie's viz and get to know Lucy and Ricky all over again!
Now for the moment you've all been waiting for - the winner of Iron Viz: Silver Screen.
The 2017 Iron Viz: Silver Screen Winner
In case you need a reminder, the winner of Iron Viz: Silver Screen wins a ticket to TC17 in Las Vegas, and will be joining out previous Iron Viz feeder winners Joshua Milligan and Tristan Guillevain on-stage for a viz battle for the ages.
A panel of judges from Tableau - all experts in the field of data viz - assessed the entries against the following criteria:
- Design
- Storytelling
- Analysis
- Overall appeal
The scores have been tallied, and we have a winner. The envelope please...
Jacob Olsufka takes home the statue for his remarkable Star Wars - Screen Time Analysis viz! He turned an incredibly rich data set into an elegant analysis of the Star Wars franchise, easily accessible by fans and non-fans alike. Several of the judges remarked about how much time they'd spent looking at the detail Jacob exposed, but also how much they appreciated the simplicity and consistency of the design and color scheme.
Congratulations to all of the winners, and a huge round of applause to all of the participants who joined us in this year's Iron Viz journey! We'll see you at TC17 in Vegas - Jacob, Tristan and Joshua - and for everyone else, we'll share the results of the on-stage competition as soon as a winner is crowned!
