Tableau Data Day Out - Sydney Agenda

Main Stage: Grand Ballroom

09:10 a.m. - Guest Keynote: Dr Jason Fox - A Quest Beckons

Defaults—established ways of doing things—are an important element of any enterprise. We need them. They save us a heap of time, and make us much more efficient. But lo! Most organisations have now become Cursed with Efficiency. We’re all so busy, and so what happens is... more of the same default thinking. We seek quick fixes and familiar solutions that tick the right boxes and save us time, without realising we may be venturing closer toward irrelevance.

To stay relevant, we must know when (and how) to disrupt default thinking, to ask the better questions and have the richer conversations, so that we may pioneer new ways—beyond the default.

Dr Jason Fox

10:10 a.m. - Tableau Keynote: Data Literacy - The Most Important Skill of the 21st Century

Data Literacy will be the most critical skill to acquire in the 21st century. We believe this new skill will change the world in the same way that literacy transformed access to knowledge in the centuries after the printing press. But just having access to tools is not enough. Just as the printing press made books available, people still had to learn to read, the broad availability of data and analytical tools requires a fundamental change in human behaviour. Data literacy is not only about consuming and understanding what others have created but more importantly about the ability to experiment and share our ideas and perspectives.
