Vidya Setlur
About
Vidya Setlur is an Associate Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan, where she directs the Data Semantics Lab. Her research explores the intersection of data visualization, natural language processing, and AI, with a focus on how people interact with data, express analytical intent, and make sense of intelligent systems. Prior to joining U-M, she led Tableau Research at Tableau/Salesforce and maintains a limited research affiliation with Tableau Research.
Vidya joined Tableau Research in 2012, and has contributed to projects involving semantics and visual representation such as semantic icon encoding and semantically resonant color palettes, and a natural language interface for data exploration called Eviza. Subsequently, as part of productizing Tableau's natural language feature, Ask Data, she moved to engineering and was a manager on the Natural Language Team for a couple of years. There she focused primarily on developing the theory and engineering of user intent in analytical conversation to provide analytically useful interpretations of users' utterances.
