City of Hope, Data Culture Mindset - Saving Lives and Solving Real-World Health Issues

As healthcare continues to evolve, understanding data has become increasingly critical to being able to make timely, informed decisions. At City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, we replaced traditional data silos and manual processes with a data culture mindset and modern approach to managing our data and facilitating research.

Our visualization-first approach has enabled us to better manage, understand, and utilize our data for research and discovery to improve health. Specifically, our team of population cancer scientists have been collecting and analyzing real-world data to discover what differs between the healthy and the ill. The work we do with data visualization can easily translate to activities that occur in disease and patient registries, in exploration of social determinants of health, and in population health.

Watch this on-demand webinar to explore how your organization can also make this data-first transition and learn how we rely on data visualization for four key data tasks:

1. As our Quality Control guide. New data are inspected before integration, viewed alongside related information, and introduced visually, to facilitate understanding

2. As the tools we use for data exploration

3. To simplify the complex and reduce potentially overwhelming clinical and longitudinal data into easier-to-digest components

4. To uncover those unknowns that stimulate creativity and launch new inquiries

James V. Lacey, Jr., Ph.D.

Professor & Director, Division of Health Analytics, City of Hope

Jim Lacey is a cancer researcher working at the intersection of epidemiology, data science, and population health informatics. After earning his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, in the Federal Government. For 8 years at the NCI, he studied causes & early detection of female reproductive cancers.

In 2009, he joined City of Hope, a Comprehensive Cancer Center outside Los Angeles, CA, with plans to continue that research—but soon found himself focused on modernizing and innovating the ways in which large-scale epidemiology research studies are conducted. In recent years, as Director of the Division of Cancer Etiology and now Director of the new Division of Health Analytics, he has become a leader in applying cloud computing, data commons, industrial-scale logistics, and customer-engagement principles to improve cancer research and population health.
