Alfons Kemper

Principal Technical Advisor

About

Alfons Kemper is Professor at Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Principal Technical Advisor at Tableau. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC) and a Habilitation Doctorate from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). After professorships at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH), and the University of Passau he now holds the Chair for Database Systems at TUM. There, he initiated and together with his colleague Thomas Neumann led the development of the innovative New-SQL database system HyPer (http://www.hyper-db.com) that was acquired by Tableau in 2016. Together with many of his Ph.D. graduates he joined the new Tableau Development Center in Munich to further develop and optimize Hyper to become Tableaus backbone query engine. Alfons' research interests focus on advanced scalable database and data exploration systems. The various research projects and publications can be found on the Database group's website at TUM (http://www-db.in.tum.de).
