The Growing Importance of Data Visualization

Dr. Jonathan Schwabish is a Senior Research Associate in the Urban Institute's Income and Benefits Policy Center and is considered a leader in the data visualization field. Schwabish is a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in research and has written on various aspects of how to best visualize data, including technical aspects of creation, design best practices, and how to communicate social science research in more accessible ways.

During this presentation, Dr. Schwabish discusses recent changes in the field of data visualization for government—in part driven by changes in big data, open data, and open source programming and tools. He puts out a question on whether these advances can be used to help governments improve citizen services and mission performance.

Jonathan Schwabish

Senior Research Associate in The Urban Institute’s Income & Benefits Policy Center

Jonathan Schwabish is a Senior Research Associate in the Urban Institute’s Income and Benefits Policy Center. He is also a member of Urban’s Communications team where he specializes in data visualization and presentation design. Schwabish is considered a leader in the data visualization field and is a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in research.

He has written on various aspects of how to best visualize data, including technical aspects of creation, design best practices, and how to communicate social science research in more accessible ways. He has become a regular presence in data visualization conferences as a keynote speaker, conducts data visualization training workshops, teaches data visualization and statistics, and regularly speaks about best data visualization practices at private-sector firms, think tanks, and government agencies.

Dr. Schwabish spent the previous 9 years at the Congressional Budget Office and continues to pursue his economic research agenda in such areas as earnings and income inequality, immigration, disability insurance, retirement security, data measurement, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and other aspects of public policy. He writes about data visualization and presentation techniques on his websitePolicyViz.com, moderates the HelpMeViz.com website, co-hosts the Rad Presenters Podcast, and is active on Twitter @jschwabish.
