Iron Viz Global 2018 Feeder 2 - Health and Well-being

TL;DR

The second feeder of the 2018 Iron Viz Global competition is officially open. The theme is: Health and Well-being. Submissions are accepted until 15th July 2018 (11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time). See the FAQ page for details on how to participate, and for eligible countries of residence.

The Theme

Earlier this year we asked the Tableau community to send us their suggestions for topics that we could use for Iron Viz, the world's craziest data visualization contest. One of the most popular suggestions was healthcare data. There were also a few people who were in favour of "quantified self". We liked both of these, and we think they are close enough to be included in the same competition, hence we are calling this round's theme "Health and Well-being".

There should be plenty of interesting data sets to answer your health-related questions. Just to give a few examples, at the global level, there is data from the WHO, the World Bank or the Gapminder Foundation. At the micro-level you can use the Tableau Web Data Connectors to analyse your personal fitness data from apps like Runkeeper, Fitbit, Strava or Moves. If you do use your own data, please keep in mind that all submissions must be published on Tableau Public, thereby making the data publicly available. But of course there are also many levels in between the macro and the micro - the sky's the limit with what you can do with this theme.

We can't wait to see what interesting stories you will tell! So send us your vizzes on the topic of Health and Well-being and stand the chance of winning a trip to New Orleans.

The Process

Here is how it works.

  • Build a viz in Tableau that somehow touches on the theme of health and well-being.
  • Upload it to your Tableau Public profile.
  • Submit the link to the viz via the submission form, before 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on July 15th, 2018:

Submission Form

See here for more details, including the list of eligible countries of residence as well as the official rules of the contest.

Once we have received all the vizzes we will evaluate them based on three criteria: Analysis, Storytelling, and Design. A group of Tableau employees will take a first stab at compiling a shortlist with the best vizzes. This will then be looked at by our jury of judges. For this round we have Tableau’s own Andy Dé as well as three fantastic guest judges: Max Roser, Mona Chalabi and Nadieh Bremer.

The Prize

We are looking to fill the second of three spots at the Iron Viz final at Tableau Conference. So the author of the viz with the highest score will win a trip to New Orleans, a ticket to Tableau Conference 2018, and the honor to compete against two other viz champions as part of the Iron Viz Final, which takes place on the big stage of our annual customer conference.

The Tableau community will also get the chance to choose a Crowd Favorite, and the jury might also honor one or two special mentions.

May the best viz win!

PS: There will be a third feeder later this summer, so please do keep those ideas for themes coming. Send them to us on Twitter using the hashtag #IronVizTheme.
