Iron Viz Global 2018 Feeder 1: Books and Literature
TL;DR
The 1st feeder of the 2018 Iron Viz Global competition is officially open. The theme is: Books and Literature. Submissions are accepted until 13 May (11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time). See the FAQ page for details on how to participate, and for eligible countries of residence.
The Theme
The Tableau community in Europe already had the opportunity to create some amazing vizzes for Iron Viz Europe. Rest of the world, thanks for being patient; your time to shine is now! You can take the first step towards becoming the Iron Viz Global Champion today.
For the first of the three feeders of our global data visualization competition we decided on the theme of “books and literature”. This was inspired by some of the suggestions that were submitted via Twitter, using the #IronVizTheme hashtag. Thank you for that and keep them coming too, as we will have two more feeder rounds this year!
Now this theme might look like a challenge. But if you think it is as stuffy as an old library, you are mistaken. There are lots interesting, if not unsettling, developments in the spheres of books, literature and reading habits that one could look at. A few years ago people were worried that ebooks would be the death of literature, now everyone just seems to be watching Netflix; attention spans are not much longer than 140 characters; and Amazon continues on it’s road to retail domination. Also, with the Swedish Academy engulfed in turmoil, what will happen to the Nobel Literature Prize?
But book lovers all over the world won’t let any of this distract them from their Sunday read. They still have their favorite authors, their favorite libraries, and their favorite cafes.
Whether you are going short on books or are a real bibliophile, we are sure you can find an interesting question that is waiting to be answered with data. If you do, tell us the story using your best data viz skills! We are sure the Tableau community will surprise us with some fascinating insights and can’t wait to see the results.
The Process
Intrigued enough to give it a shot? Here is how it works.
- Build a viz in Tableau that somehow touches on the theme of "books and literature".
- Upload it to your Tableau Public profile.
- Submit the link to the viz via the submission form, before 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on May 13, 2018:
Enter the contest!
See here for more details, including the list of eligible countries of residence as well as the official rules of the contest.
Once we have received all the vizzes we will evaluate them based on three criteria: Analysis, Storytelling, and Design. A group of Tableau employees will take a first stab at compiling a shortlist with the best vizzes. This will then be looked at by our jury of judges.
For this round of the contest we are absolutely delighted to have two fantastic guest judges from the data viz community: Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic and Alberto Cairo. How is that for extra motivation to participate?
The Prize
Oh wait, you want to participate because of the prize? Fair enough. After all, the author of the viz with the highest score will win a trip to New Orleans, a ticket to Tableau Conference 2018, and the honor to compete against two other viz champions as part of the Iron Viz Final, which takes place on the big stage of our annual customer conference.
The Tableau community will also get the chance to choose a Crowd Favorite, and the jury might also honor one or two special mentions.
But even if you don’t win anything, seasoned Iron Viz participants will tell you that the journey is the destination; that it is an fantastic opportunity to hone your data viz skills and have your work seen by a crazy, but friendly community of like-minded people.
We’ll leave you with that thought, and wish you all the best luck! May the best viz win.
