Make a splash in Iron Viz Water

The third feeder of the 2018 Iron Viz Global competition is officially open! The theme is... Water! Submissions are accepted until 28th August 2018 (11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time). See the FAQ page for details on how to participate, and for eligible countries of residence.

The Theme

Water is the driving force of all nature.

Among the themes crowdsourced earlier this year, one of the suggested themes was water 💧. If you live in the Northern hemisphere, the current heatwaves may have you obsessed with water. If you live in countries facing water stress, then water is a constant topic of discussion and attention. We thought this third feeder would be a perfect opportunity for to reflect on our relationship with water, and to create fascinating data stories.

Water as a theme is relatively broad, which presents an enormous opportunity to find your own angle on this topic. If you are not sure where to start, we gathered ideas of data sources to immerse you in the theme. If you are interested in the geography of water, you can have a look at the European Commission's Global Surface Water data or explore water-related disasters with data sets like UK's coastal floodings over time. If you are more interested in water access, then you can start with the UNICEF water & sanitation data. Makeover Monday also had an interesting data set on the water footprint of food for week 30 of 2017.

We just can't wait to discover the water stories you will uncover. And of course, our winner will win the third and last spot on the Iron Viz stage in New Orleans!

The Process

Whether you are new to Iron Viz or a veteran, it's easy to participate!

  • Build a viz in Tableau that somehow touches on the theme of water.
  • Upload it to your Tableau Public profile.
  • Submit the link to the viz via the submission form, before 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on August 28th, 2018:

Submission Form

See here for more details, including the list of eligible countries of residence as well as the official rules of the contest.

Once we have received all the vizzes we will evaluate them based on three criteria: Analysis, Storytelling, and Design. A group of Tableau employees will take a first stab at compiling a shortlist with the best vizzes. This will then be looked at by a jury of external dataviz experts. For this third feeder, we have four fantastic guest judges:

  • Giorgia Lupi, information designer and artist, who co-created the Dear Data project
  • John Burn-Murdoch, senior data-visualization journalist at the Financial Times
  • RJ Andrews, data storyteller and founder of Info we trust, and
  • Shirley Wu, co-creator of the data sketches collaborative project

The Prize

The author of the viz which receives the highest score from our judges will win a trip to New Orleans, a ticket to Tableau Conference 2018, and the honor to compete against Ludovic Tavernier and Corey Jones live on stage at Tableau Conference 2018 in New Orleans!

The Tableau community will also get the chance to choose a Crowd Favorite, and the jury might also honor one or two special mentions.

So, what are you waiting for?
