How many people died of heart disease last year? Is child obesity on the rise? What’s the biggest health threat Americans face? The answers to these questions can help save lives by driving improvements in care and prevention. And thanks to open data initiatives, the public has access to the numbers that hold the answers. But that’s not enough, says Ramon Martinez, a health metrics adviser with the Pan American Health Organization.

The Tableau community produced a plethora of posts in May, from a commentary on how to approach viz building that provides great time and sanity saving insights, to a detailed comparison of Tableau Server performance on EC2.

Hundreds of Tableau enthusiasts tuned in for the first European-led Tableau 9.0 Virtual User Group event earlier this month. We showed off the shiny new features of Tableau 9.0, which help data explorers stay in the flow of their work. Psychologist Mihaly Csikzentmihaly calls this flow the secret to happiness, as Tableau’s own Andy Cotgreave explained during his keynote.

In 2013, when I took on a new role as a BI analyst for a nonprofit network of charter schools in Indianapolis, I had no prior experience in business intelligence. March Madness marks the end to what our sports analyst Dash Davidson calls the “sports purgatory that is the weeks following the Super Bowl." Thousands of Tableau enthusiasts joined us to celebrate the launch of Tableau 9.0 during our first-ever Virtual Tableau User Group event this week. The live feed from our Seattle headquarters reached Tableau User Group members across the world, many of them gathered at 25 local TUG viewing parties across the U.S. and Canada.

On January 9th, we launched the Tableau 9.0 beta program. Over the past two weeks, we've seen an outpouring of blog posts, tutorials, and helpful feedback from the community. Now, we're inviting you to share those thoughts and creations as part of a social media contest! Overwhelmingly, one of the most talked-about new features has been Level of Detail (LOD) expressions. What are LOD expressions? As Alan Eldridge puts it, they "allow you to directly define the level of detail at which a calculation should be performed." That means they give you much greater control over how your data is aggregated. LOD expressions are one way to bring your data to a whole new level (get it?) in version 9. However, the possibilities don't end there. There are a number of other features that are enabling greater data acrobatics as well.
