Community Highlight

To recognize new and consistent Tableau contributors—we’re excited to have a section within the monthly DataFam Roundup called the Tableau Community Highlight. Find out how to get involved.

Miles Cuminskey, Data Visualization Consultant at The Information Lab
New York, USA

Miles Cumiskey is a Data Visualization Consultant at The Information Lab. They utilize Tableau both professionally, to develop dashboards and lead training for a transit authority, and personally as a creative outlet. Miles’s Tableau journey began under pressure when they had just one month to learn the software for a job interview by creating a visualization about dog breeds, and they quickly mastered the platform through hands-on practice and on-the-job mentorship from colleagues. Today, they are actively involved in the community, supporting in-person events for the DataPrideNYC Tableau User Group (which features creative sessions like Jeopardy-style Queer trivia) and presenting on screen-reader accessible dashboards for the Accessibility TUG.

Driven by personal experience with dyslexia and hearing issues, Miles is a passionate advocate for accessible design. They believe creators can better prioritize accessibility by experiencing their own work as a user with a disability would, such as navigating without a mouse, using color-blindness simulators, and testing different scales. Miles loves sharing knowledge through lasting, shareable blog posts and TUG presentations, and they were thrilled when their method for generating alt-text through captions was cross-shared between user groups. Looking ahead, Miles is focused on creating a comprehensive guide for start-to-finish accessibility in Tableau. This upcoming resource will cover WCAG compliance, dashboard design best practices, and actionable screen-reader examples, serving as a valuable asset for the entire "DataFam" community.
