As the world looks to Rio this summer, we're looking to the data. To celebrate the Summer Games, we're harnessing the power of the Tableau community to explore the data stories behind the games. To that end, we've put together a gallery of vizzes about the competitions.

The Internet of Things has made collecting data easy. The hard bit has been analyzing that data. The applications bundled with IoT devices don’t allow for freeform exploration, and only the coders of the world can write APIs and build infrastructure to get and store the data. Tableau 10 is changing that with its Google Sheets connector.

Bar charts are a staple in data visualization. They are often the first chart type that comes to mind when comparing quantities across discrete groups such as sales amount for different product categories. But there are many cases where you may want to take advantage of the width of the bars and their location along the axis to present more information. For example, if you’re visualizing the number of customers by age group and the age groups are of unequal sizes, you may want to use bars of different width.

You might have noticed we redesigned all of the color palettes for Tableau 10. While our classic palettes had served us well (since Tableau 1.5 for the basic ones), we wanted a more elegant, sophisticated appearance, a better blend of functionality and style. To achieve this, the design was a collaboration between myself and Cristy Miller, our director of visual design. By blending our two perspectives, we achieved a result that is both beautiful and functional.

That’s what happened when the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) adopted a self-service approach to analytics. The organization’s Fast Analytics team recently won the Project of the Year award in Health Data Management’s Analytics All-Stars Awards.

Every six months, the Tableau Ambassador program looks to find more enthusiastic, community oriented people to induct as new ambassadors. And this July was no different. We have nine new Tableau Ambassadors, three within each branch: the community forums, social media, and user groups.
