In the past several years, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have both announced their intentions to give the vast majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes before or at their death. This week, 40 billionaires joined them in their cause. All told, America’s billionaires have pledged close to $200 billion, as you can see in the viz below. Hover over for more detail, or click on a bar to see their written pledge.

It is hard to grasp the enormity of these pledges. If they were to focus their giving, these pledges could eradicate AIDS worldwide, provide every human with clean water, clean up the BP oil spill and save the Amazon, with plenty left over. Powerful stuff!

I like the viz. However, I find two of the descriptions contained in the "Putting things in perspective" bar chart are a little hard to understand.

Total Net Worth (Giving pledge families)
Total Pledges

How about this:

Net Worth (40 Billionaires)
Pledge (40 Billionaires)
