Data Literacy will be the most critical skill to acquire in the 21st century. We believe this new skill will change the world in the same way that literacy transformed access to knowledge in the centuries after the printing press. But just having access to tools is not enough. Just as the printing press made books available, people still had to learn to read, the broad availability of data and analytical tools requires a fundamental change in human behaviour. Data literacy is not only about consuming and understanding what others have created but more importantly about the ability to experiment and share our ideas and perspectives.

HESTA has been on the Tableau journey for around 3 years. We started with a conviction to be a data led organisation, and firmly believe Tableau is the right tool to help us do that. But we’ve had plenty of false starts and we’ve learned lots about ourselves along the way. We’ve learned that all-the-data is sometimes too-much-data, and we’ve learned the value of curating and creating knowledge. We’ve learned that not everyone wants to be an analyst, not everyone aspires to be a rock-star data scientist (although everyone DOES want what they can bring to the table) – instead what we have is lots of people who ask really great questions, and incredible capability in pockets that need to be nurtured and amplified. We’ve learned the value of “done, not perfect” and how to iterate quickly to enable the next question, and we’ve learned how to listen to our people and crowd source the next big thing.
