Man meets Analytics: How Paul fell in love with data

Tableau: When did you fall head over heels in love with data?

Paul: It was in a florescent light computer lab, I was gazing into the eye of an x86 PC (at the time a very sexy model)… hard to be sexy in florescent light. 640KB of RAM was a lot. The World Wide Web was just starting, Lycos was the main search engine, bulletin boards systems were prevalent, and AOL was still cool! The tools we used were Wordperfect, Lotus 123, Dbase, Foxpro, Paradox, and yes… DOS scripts (DOS 5 was about to come out). Floppy disks were still used and came in two sizes. Windows was new. I was working on a Dbase project for a department at my university. I was taking raw student data, and organizing it into related and useable information.

Through the course of the project it went from a series of raw files, to data/information that help us understand enrollment by geo, gender, area of study, etc… The tools have changed, but data has been the one constant.

The thirst for using data to make better, faster, and more accurate decisions has continued to drive the love affair.

The Power of Cloud Databases

Tableau: Amazon Web Services has a powerful ability to store data in the cloud. What can we look forward to in the future in terms of the power of the cloud?

It can be used to outsource infrastructure both permanently or for speed /agility. It can be easily combine with on premise assets/investments.
