We are happy to announce new Tableau Online direct connectivity to Internet hosted databases. Our live connections to Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery have been so popular among our Tableau Online customers that we've added more in the latest Online maintenance release. You can now establish a direct connection to your cloud hosted MySQL, PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server databases in just two steps.

For Tableau Online customers that are using popular hosting platforms like Amazon RDS, Amazon EC2, or Microsoft Azure for their MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server databases this means worksheets and dashboards can be configured to be in constant sync with their datasources. The video below by Tableau’s Dustin Smith demonstrates just how easy it is to take advantage of this new capability in Tableau Online by using real-time social media data (special thanks to our friends at DataSift).

It’s easy to get started with a few simple steps:

1. As a Tableau Online admin, go into the Maintenance tab and click to “Allow live connections to MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server data hosted on the Internet.”

2. Add the Tableau Online IP to the authorized list (whitelist) in your hosted data provider account and you’re ready to publish Workbooks that connect live to the data sitting in your cloud databases.

Would this work for any MySQL, PostgreSQL or MS SQL hosted on a server connected to the internet, or just the cloud solutions mentioned?

It should work for any hosted solutions as long as you have whitelisted the Tableau Online IP. Please let me know if you have any issues.

How do I find the tableau online IP? How does one add it to white list on AWS EC2? Thanks!

Hi,

The link you provided does not work anymore. Can you provide a new link? Thank you very much.

Yes, it provides the ability to schedule refresh jobs for your MySQL data (assuming that it is internet hosted). Tableau Online has the feature available in the current version it's running today. Check out Dustin's demo above to see how it works and let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello..very interesting... I´d like to use this improvement but, in my case, the difference is that i am taking the data from my database stored in Mongodb via ODBC Driver and publishing an extract in Tableau online...Is there a way to do the same with NoSQL databases?

Thanks for your help!

Regards

Is this facility also available for data residing in Amazon S3?
if not then please let me know if there is a way to connect Tableau online to Amazon s3 objects so that extract refreshes may be automated in a live fashion
