Antes de Tableau, Elissa era vicepresidenta ejecutiva de marketing en IXI Corporation, una empresa especializada en información de marketing. Asimismo, ocupó cargos ejecutivos en Tele Atlas, TopTier Software y Claritas, Inc. Elissa también dedicó tiempo a la venta de publicidad para el Wall Street Journal. Obtuvo su licenciatura en la Universidad de Santa Clara y una maestría en administración de empresas (MBA) de la Universidad del Sur de California, con especialización en marketing y sistemas de toma de decisiones.
