With information playing an ever greater role in operations, users are clamoring for tools that enable them to easily access, analyze, and share data. Mainstream BI vendors are satisfying some of this pent-up demand for business intelligence (BI) expansion, but the cost and complexity of extending enterprise BI systems has made progress slow. Rather than wait, users are pushing for more influence and autonomy in the BI tool buying process, and are purchasing new tools that fall into the “data discovery” category. Data discovery tools are both complementary and competitive with the established BI tools: indeed, some of the established players have come out with products that address the need for easier deployment and customization by nontechnical users. Most data discovery tools take advantage of advances in dashboards, data visualization, search, and in-memory analytics to give nontechnical users more robust and powerful applications than those that have been available to them previously. The tools can provide users with greater analytical flexibility than standard BI systems that often carefully restrict ad hoc querying options to protect overall performance.
Based on his recently published TDWI Checklist report on Data Discovery, Dave Stodder will lead a panel discussion which will focus on the major issues involved in working with data discovery tools and methods with experts from three of the leading solutions providers.
This Webinar will offer guidelines for determining the best role for data discovery tools in organizations.
