More than 300,000 data enthusiasts are using Tableau’s free data storytelling platform for data journalism, public advocacy, and more

SEATTLE – July 28, 2017 - Tableau Software (NYSE: DATA), the global leader in visual analytics, today announced that more than one million visualizations have been published to Tableau Public, a free platform that allows anyone to analyze data and publish their visualizations and data stories to the web.

Initially launched in 2010 as a way for data enthusiasts to hone their skills and share their results for free, Tableau Public has helped ushered in a new era of data journalism and created a broad community of data enthusiasts who have garnered more than a billion views by publishing thousands of data stories every week. From visualizing college basketball statistics, to analyzing pop culture moments like Harry Potter spells, and migration patterns of global citizens, Tableau Public is consistently ranked among the top tools for data storytelling.

“Organizations around the world, including city and state governments, major international news outlets, and everyday data enthusiasts are using Tableau Public on a daily basis to explore their data and share it with the general public,” said Ben Jones, Director of Outreach Programs at Tableau. “One million visualizations in Tableau Public are truly a testament to how pervasive data is in our daily lives, and how important accurate data analysis is.

Tableau Public visualizations have been created by worldwide organizations such as:

- Popular music streaming platform Spotify created a series of three visualizations showing which emojis are most distinctively associated with top artists based on 35 million user-generated playlists.
- Argentina’s largest newspaper, La Nacion, used Tableau Public to show trends in marriage and divorce in the city of Buenos Aires.
- Deloitte consultant and Tableau Visionary Adam McCann created a visualization showing a recap of the entire sixth season of the popular Game of Thrones show.
- Real estate research platform Redfin, which uses Tableau Public to visualize real estate trends across varying markets to help homebuyers make informed decisions.

Along with companies and organizations, data enthusiasts all over the world are using this free platform to hone their skills and build a professional network. According to Ryan Sleeper, author of “Practical Tableau: 100 Tips, Tutorials, and Strategies from a Tableau Visionary,” whose visualization work has been viewed more than one million times, “Tableau Public is the perfect sandbox to learn Tableau and discover innovative ways to analyze data.”

The one-millionth visualization was created by the Iowa Workforce Development Labor Market Information Division, analyzing job-listing trends across the state of Iowa.
