Tableau: 9 years a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms
This week, Gartner published the 2021 Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms. Gartner has again recognized Tableau as a Leader—for our ninth consecutive year.
I first want to thank you, the Tableau Community, for your continued support and your commitment to data, to Tableau, and to each other. It’s been amazing to see the way this community came together this past year to help each other and use data to understand everything going on around us. We are motivated every day by your limitless enthusiasm, expertise, and generosity with your time. With your input, we released more than 200 new capabilities across the Tableau platform in 2020. In every release, we're making Tableau easier to use, more powerful, and simpler to deploy to support governed data and analytics at scale.
We believe customers all over the world are broadly deploying Tableau because it provides incredible value and drives real business outcomes. People love Tableau because it’s powerful, yet intuitive. Our innovations are people-centric by design, helping unlock creativity to solve tangible challenges with data. In addition to technology, Tableau is invested in helping organizations build their Data Culture, so they can be successful with analytics at scale. And with the biggest support network of all—our amazing global community of you and your peers—people can find their #DataFam and get inspired by the art of the possible.

Accelerate adoption with intuitive analytics that people love to use
Tableau offers a complete, integrated platform that people love to use. Tableau lets you visualize and explore all of your data without having to write code or premeditate your vizzes and dashboards. You can dive deeper, pivot analysis, and change chart types without starting over or breaking your flow. It's rare to hear the word “love” associated with software, but we hear it all the time with Tableau. And we believe this is why our customers drive successful analytics adoption. It's humbling, but we are never satisfied. We continue to make Tableau more powerful, yet easier to use. In 2020, we released some of the most highly-anticipated features in Tableau, including dynamic parameters, new data modeling capabilities, multiple map layers and improved spatial support, predictive modeling functions, and Metrics.
We also reached some incredible milestones with Tableau Prep, our easy-to-use, visual, self-service data prep product. Tableau Prep can now be used across more use cases and directly in the browser. In 2020, we added the ability to write to external databases so you can use clean data anywhere. With custom R and Python scripts, you can support any transformations and bring in predictions. And we extended the Prep connectivity options. In the recent Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: Data Preparation Tools report, Tableau is the only vendor recognized in the Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice distinction across all regions, company sizes, and industries—including the sole Customers’ Choice by users in the finance vertical.
Deploy, manage, and scale modern BI with confidence
Flexibility and choice are Tableau philosophies, so we offer the most options to deploy, connect to your data, and collaborate—whether on premises, in a public cloud or hosted SaaS, or embedded in portals or applications. We’ll never dictate your technology stack, database preferences, or analytics strategy, so you can rely on Tableau no matter what data you have, no matter where it is.
This past year, we saw how organizations making fast and agile decisions with accurate data showed the most resilience. We’re driven to help organizations promote trusted, governed data and analytics broadly so everyone can make decisions confidently. This starts with getting people up and running, which is why we simplified license management for IT and administrators. And our unique approach to data management provides valuable metadata, lineage, and data quality alerts right in the flow of users’ analysis, while providing the security and governance you need. This means increased transparency and trust in data, so everyone has the right data at the right time for making decisions.
We know it takes more than great software to succeed with analytics at scale. This past year, we introduced a record number of customers to Tableau Blueprint—which offers a holistic and step-by-step approach to building a Data Culture backed by best practices from thousands of customers and Tableau experts. And to help everyone understand the foundational concepts of communicating with data, we launched a free, self-paced eLearning course, Data Literacy for All.
Harness the full power of Salesforce + Tableau
As part of the Salesforce family, we're proud to bring our leading analytics to the Salesforce Customer 360. With data at its core, the Customer 360 is a key enabler for digital transformation. Together with MuleSoft and Datorama, Tableau can connect to and bring together even more data, providing a complete view of your business and its data to help you find opportunities and deepen customer relationships. With the new Tableau Viz Lightning web component, embedding Tableau dashboards into any Salesforce page takes just a few clicks.
We also began our integration with Tableau CRM, formerly Einstein Analytics. Built natively into the Salesforce platform, Tableau CRM provides actionable analytics and enterprise AI and machine learning capabilities embedded natively in Salesforce for a more intelligent CRM experience. This tight integration saves IT time and resources to integrate secure, visual analytics—and users see the relevant data they’re supposed to, right in their CRM interface. At Tableau Conference-ish (TC20), we shared our vision for interoperability, as well as our promise to retain and build the capabilities of both Tableau and Tableau CRM.
Now, in our first product release of 2021, we’re bringing Salesforce's powerful AI technology, Einstein Discovery, to Tableau. This enables Tableau users to enhance dashboards with predictions, explanations, and suggestions to improve predicted outcomes. With Einstein Calc, Tableau users can drag and drop calculated fields created with Einstein Discovery to get real-time predictions in Tableau dashboards. And in Tableau Prep Builder, you'll be able to add a prediction node as a step in your prep flow to bring prediction factors and improvements right into your data sets. This is just the beginning—we can't wait to show you more in 2021.
Join a global data community that “will not let you fail”
We are blown away every day by the passion, creativity, dedication, and support of the unparalleled Tableau Community. Our customers often tell us, “the Tableau Community will not let you fail.” You've grown to more than a million data rockstars all over the world, connecting to help accelerate learning, answer questions, and build a network that inspires and supports one another to reach personal and professional data goals. We believe this community is so successful because it’s made of all kinds of people—not just technical users, but bloggers, analysts, teachers, and people just like you who understand your work and challenges.
In a turbulent year, the Tableau Community showed up in some truly remarkable ways. Many of you partnered with us and led initiatives to bring the data world together around COVID-19, racial justice, and the 2020 US election. More than 145,000 of you brought your passion, love, and data magic to our all-virtual Tableau Conference-ish.
You continue to share your work on Tableau Public, making it the world’s largest repository for data visualization. With more than 13,000 new visualizations posted each week, it's an incredible gallery of data viz excellence that explores the art of the possible. You’ll find inspiration across every industry, region, analytics use case, and passion project—from healthcare, politics, and the environment to music, art, entertainment, and more.
If you’re not already involved, I hope you’ll join the community to share, engage, and grow your skills. From developers to IT, analysts to data leaders, we're confident you'll find your people.
Thank you for your continued support
We’ve had a year unlike any other, with a lot of work left ahead of us—but we’re grateful that we can look back to celebrate the work and achievements we’ve made together. Let’s continue to build a culture that puts data at the center of every conversation, that lifts unheard voices, and that helps everyone find opportunities to drive meaningful change in our work.
We look forward to continuing our work with you in 2021 and beyond. I know we say this a lot, but we really can’t do this without you—your feedback is essential to ensuring our products help everyone see and understand their data. I invite you to join the conversation and contribute your ideas, big or small, in our Ideas Forum. Thank you!
