Debussy’s Premiere Arabesque-- Visually

Put time on the x axis and pitch on the y. Then size encode on volume. Lastly, color encode the voices.

What do you get? A visualization of Debussy’s Premiere Arabesque.

So says Steve Pellegrin, Development Lead at Tableau, who found this musical visualization on YouTube.

More from Steve:

What I like about this viz is the way it makes the voicing apparent. When playing a polyphonic piece, beginners tend to read it vertically (as chords) rather than horizontally as a collection of interwoven melodies.

Music for the ear, music for the eye.
