Ever wondered why obesity is such a problem in the United States? This is an interactive visualization which shows the correlation between three activities and obesity by county. Every county in this visualization has obesity rates above the worldwide average.
About this Viz
In this visualization, each dot represents a county. Its location on the y axis corresponds to its obesity rate. Similarly, its location on the x axis displays the percentage of people who smoke, do not exercise or consume few fruits or vegetables. The steeper the line, the higher the correlation between the activity and obesity in that region.
Click on a region or dot to see information in more detail below the scatter plot. The Midwest has a relatively low correlation between eating few fruits/vegetables and obesity. They may eat lots of beef, but apparently they compensate in other ways!
