2016 Do Good Data Viz Challenge

Show the world how powerful your data can be. The 2016 Do Good Data Viz Challenge is a chance for all Do Good Data attendees to put their Tableau visualization skills to the test and inspire others to make a difference with their data.Judges will pick five winners based on design, storytelling, and good data insights.

Winners will have the opportunity to showcase their cause during a main stage presentation at the conference and on social media

Our judges will determine the winner based on the following point system:

  • 50 Points: Storytelling and Insight
  • 25 Points: Design
  • 25 Points: Overall Appeal

Participants may use any data with a connection to a non-profit or social good organization.

The contest begins on February 1 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time and ends on April 20th at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Winners will secure

  • a $1,000 donation
  • two copies of Tableau Desktop Professional
  • 10 Tableau Online licenses

for their favorite non-profit.

1. Get Tableau Software

The first 500 registrants for Do Good Data 2016 receive a free copy of Tableau Desktop Professional. If you do not have a copy of Tableau, you can download a free trial here.

You’ll need data! Partner with your favorite nonprofit and help them visualize their data. Or, here are a couple data sets that will work great if you don’t have a nonprofit to help.

Q: What are the terms of participating?
Any validly registered attendee of Do Good Data 2016 who is not employed by Tableau Software can participate as long as they follow the contest guidelines and rules.

Q: Do I have to be attending Do Good Data 2016 to participate?
Yes, you must be registered and planning to attend to participate.

Q: What are the dates of the contest?
The contest begins on February 1 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time and ends on April 20th at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Q: What if I submit an entry early, and then later re-work my viz and want to replace my first entry?
That is fantastic – feel free to do that up until the close of the contest.

Q: If I don’t have a copy of Tableau, how can I enter this contest?
The first 500 conference attendees to request a license of Tableau Desktop will receive a free license. This license can be used for the Do Good Data Viz Challenge or in service of another social good organization.

Q: Can I really use any data?
Go for it, so long as it focuses on a charity or some other data used for social good.

Questions about obtaining the free Tableau Desktop Professional license should be directed to the Do Good Data team. Q: How will winner be chosen?
A panel of judges will evaluate all submissions based on the following criteria:

  • 25 points - Overall Appeal
  • 25 points - Design Elements
  • 50 points - Storytelling/Data Analysis/Findings

Q: Can I substitute prizes?
Nope. No changes can be made to Tableau’s software contribution, and only the designated organization can redeem the licenses. Donations can be made only to registered charities (501c3 in the United States or equivalent in other countries).
