Tableau Healthcare Customers Make Headlines

By Doreen Jarman 2012/07/18

It seems that virtually every industry and size of company is harnessing the power of data these days and healthcare is no exception. Tableau customers such as Seattle Children’s, University of California, Irvine Medical Center, LSU Health Sciences and Kaleida Health have all shared their stories with us. Industry and mainstream press are also starting to take notice. In fact, a couple of our healthcare customers were featured in news articles just this week.

Oklahoma’s Tulsa World published an article on how The Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) in Tulsa used Tableau to reveal paramedics spent more than 2,500 hours during the past five months waiting with patients for beds rather than responding to emergency calls. The analysis further revealed that during the five months studied, EMSA paramedics waited 2,880 hours during 5,568 individual patient transports for beds to become available in emergency rooms at 20 Tulsa and Oklahoma City hospitals. As a result of these insights, hospitals will be able to develop solutions to improve bed delay before it becomes a crisis situation.

In GigaOm’s article “Better medicine, brought to you by big data”, Derrik Harris points to several examples of how healthcare companies are leveraging data analysis, including Seattle Children’s. In this case, doctors and staff at Seattle Children’s are analyzing terabytes of data with Tableau to save the hospital $3 million on supply chain costs.

Coming up at the Tableau Customer Conference in San Diego this November, Tableau healthcare customers Memorial Sloan Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Intermountain Healthcare, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University and Canadian Insitute for Health Information will participate in a special healthcare industry panel to discuss their Tableau deployments.
