Gartner Magic Quadrant Report Is Out – Tableau Progresses!

By Elissa Fink 2011/02/08

The 2011 Gartner Magic Quadrant report is out. You can get your copy of the Gartner Magic Quadrant report now. We're pleased to be positioned as a “Challenger” based on Gartner’s assessment of our “ability to execute” and “completeness of vision”. See the Magic Quadrant image (the image was created by Gartner, not using Tableau's applications).

We were struck by the interesting trends that Gartner observed and in particular their observations about the struggles between business users’ needs for ease of use and IT’s needs for control.

Specifically, Gartner wrote “The demand side of the BI platform market in 2010 was defined by an intensified struggle between business users' need for ease of use and flexibility on the one hand, and IT's need for standards and control on the other.”

The analysts went on to write, “With ‘ease of use’ now surpassing ‘functionality’ for the first time as the dominant BI platform buying criterion in research conducted for this report, vocal, demanding and influential business users are increasingly driving BI purchasing decisions, most often choosing easier to use data discovery tools over traditional BI platforms — with or without IT's consent.”

Gartner's highly regarded Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence is based on Gartner’s detailed customer surveys, interviews and analysis. We have seen that many organizations will only consider software vendors that appear on the Magic Quadrant.

Again, you can access a copy of the report here.

By the way, Gartner typically releases more detailed reports with rankings of business intelligence software providers. When those are available, we’ll share them here.

The report makes Tableau look like Apple; premium pricing, functionality competitors want to copy, highest customer sat.

Must admit to looking in disbelief at the top RHS of the diagram; all the people with deep pockets and in a number of cases, a confederation of niche offerings to give the illusion of high market share. But there you go; when you add the word "Enterprise" to BI platforms, a reality distortion field comes into play!

Very interesting given the strength of the 'BI Platform' Vendors. The immediate, 'rapid fire' analytical capabilities have been well received by most business users I've encountered. The visualization capabilities do remain an education process. Tableau's 'Show me!' button is a great feature to get over this hurdle. When users start to actually see their data they can improve their effectiveness dramatically. Though I lead technical BI initiatives I appreciate Tableau's niche in providing business users with a tool for ready and intuitive insight. There is always enough work in I.T. Any tool that helps make users more self sufficient is welcome.
