INTRODUCTION

The T8 Forensic USB Bridge incorporates an LCD display through which the user can view a variety of information. Some of this information is useful in the normal course of forensic work, such as the make, model, serial number, and capacity of the subject USB mass storage device. Other information is intended to assist in troubleshooting situations in which the T8 may not be recognizing USB devices as expected.

NAVIGATING THE LCD DISPLAY

The two buttons, Menu and Enter, on the top face of the T8 allow the user to navigate among the many informational screens which can be displayed by the T8.

If a Main Menu screen is currently displayed, then the Menu button advances to the next Main Menu screen. If an informational screen within a menu is currently displayed, then the Menu button returns the display to the corresponding Main Menu screen.
If a Main Menu screen is currently displayed, then the Enter button advances to the first informational screen for that menu item. If an informational screen is currently displayed, then the Enter button advances to the next informational screen within the same Main Menu selection.

Feel free to experiment with these buttons. There is nothing a user can do through the T8 user interface which can interfere with the correct operation of the T8.

POWER ON

Shortly after the T8 power switch is turned ON, the T8 displays the following screen.

While this screen is displayed, the T8 also performs an internal diagnostic. During the diagnostic, you should see the Host Detect, Write Block, Activity, and Device Detect LEDs flash ON in sequence. At the end of the diagnostic, the T8 will turn the Write Block LED ON.

MAIN MENU

After the power-ON diagnostic is complete, the T8 display defaults to the Status Display. To view the Main Menu, press the Menu button one time. Pressing the Menu button repeatedly display the following sequence of Main Menu selections.

Status Display

Device Information Display

USB Technical Information Display

T8 Bridge Information Display

Pressing the Enter button with any of these screens displayed advances the display to the first of the informational screens for that display.

STATUS DISPLAY

The informational screens in the Status Display alternate between the T8 copyright notice and information about the USB device attached to the T8. The Status Display is different from other T8 informational displays in one important regard; the Status Display automatically advances through each of its information screens on roughly a two-second interval.

When a USB mass storage device has been properly recognized by the T8, the Status display will automatically rotate among screens similar to the following.

T8 Copyright Notice.

Indicates USB device has been recognized successfully.

Manufacturer name of the USB device.

Model/product name of the USB device.

Capacity, in sectors, of the USB device...Each sector is generally 512 bytes.

NOTE: Some USB mass storage devices do not return a manufacturer or model/product name. In these cases, the T8 will display "No Str Available."

DEVICE INFORMATION

The Device Information Display lets the user examine additional information about the USB device attached to the T8.

Indicates USB device has been recognized successfully.

Manufacturer name of the USB device

Model/product name of the USB device.

Serial number of the USB device.

Firmware Revision of the USB mass storage device (not the T8 firmware revision).

The speed of the USB device (high, full, or low).

USB class information: C=class, S=subclass, P=protocol.

Information about how the T8 is internally managing the USB device.

The SCSI device class of the USB device, e.g., SCSI class 0 = "disk device".

NOTE: Some USB mass storage devices do not return a manufacturer, model/product name, or serial number. In these cases, the T8 will display "No Str Available."

(It is actually a violation of the USB Mass Storage Class specification for a device not to return a unique serial number. But, some USB devices fail to return a serial number nonetheless.)

When viewing these screens, please be aware that current versions of the T8 truncate strings to the first 16 characters for display. If a string is longer than 16 characters, the T8 will only show the first 16.  This is especially important to remember when considering information like the device serial number, as serial numbers longer than 16 characters will not be fully displayed.

USB TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The USB Technical Information Display reveals information that will generally be helpful only when troubleshooting devices which are not recognized by the T8 as expected. If you encounter such a situation, you may be asked to report information from these screens to Tableau.

Displays internal device #, speed (HS/FS/LS), Dev or Hub, and device mfg. name.

Device model name.

Device serial number.

Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) of the USB device.

Class, subclass, and protocol of the USB device.

USB revision (in BCD) and number of USB configurations supported by USB device.

Current requriements (power requirements) of the USB device.

Information about how the T8 is internally managing the USB device.

NOTE: There are currently eight information screens for each device. It is important to note that there is a USB Hub built in to the T8 itself, and this built in device is always shown as "Dev0" in the USB Technical Information displays. "Dev0" should generally be ignored when troubleshooting problems with external USB devices attached to the T8.

T8 BRIDGE INFORMATION

The T8 Bridge Information Display provides information about the T8 itself. Do not confuse this with information about a USB device which may be attached to the T8. Information on the USB device is available through other menu choices documented above.

T8 model name.

T8 Firmware timestamp.

T8 Serial number (hi = high 32-bits, lo = low 32-bits).

State of T8 DIP switch #1 (not currently used).

State of T8 DIP switch #2 (see switch documentation).

State of T8 DIP switch #3 (see switch documentation).

State of T8 DIP switch #4 (not currently used).
